A unique insight into what it takes to make a Royal wedding gown

With the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle less than a week away (we’re so excited!), the final preparations for the Big Day will be well underway.

It’s rumoured that Meghan has had her final dress fitting and is said to be overjoyed with her bespoke wedding gown. The process of having a wedding dress custom made for you is a truly special experience.

Can you imagine the feeling of having your own made-to-measure, completely unique dress created for you?

Well, we can share with you what that feels like because we experience it with our happy brides every day. Meghan’s dress will have been created exactly to her requirements – bespoke, made-to-measure, handmade and completely unique. And that’s precisely what we create for all of our brides here at Lesley Cutler Bridal Wear.

So while our future HRH is busy running around the capital doing last-minute pre-wedding prep, sit back and read an insight into what it takes to make a bespoke wedding gown that is fit for a Princess…

Sketching

The whole process will start with the sketching of the ideas Meghan wants to incorporate into her gown. These will have developed and moved on to the perfect style for a Princess. Our brides can expect nothing less – creating a gown from scratch is a very individual, personal and creative experience and Lesley will sketch various options for you that will suit your figure, shape, your personality and the occasion.

Fabrics

For Meghan the selection of the silk fabrics, lace and linings will be carefully considered. The Royal wedding dress will have been made from the highest quality silk fabrics and hand made lace and is rumoured to be adorned with hand-stitched beading. We’re proud of the numerous beautiful, luxurious, silk fabrics that we can offer our brides and hundreds of colours, laces, trimmings and embellishments.

Calico toile ‘test-run’

Next would have been the taking of numerous measurements so that a pattern and calico toile is made to fit Meghan precisely. This is like a test run of the dress in cotton, to make sure everything looks good when worn and will have been fitted to sculpt her figure and flatter her shape. The details like the proportion and height of the neckline will have been scrutinised to give the best look possible. Sometimes the tiniest of alterations makes a huge impact to the whole look.

The most exciting part – the dress fittings

At this stage the wedding gown will be made to near completion. This is such an exciting stage as the real dress is revealed in all its glory with the carefully selected fabrics, lace and embellishments.  There will have been numerous fittings to nip and tuck and perfect the dress. Trying on a beautiful, handmade wedding dress in her chosen silk fabric, it will no doubt be the most exquisite dress Meghan has ever owned.

And you can have this experience too! Our talented and experienced team design and hand-make beautiful wedding gowns all year round.
